Top 14 Ways to Reuse your Paper and Plastic Bags

They don’t necessarily need to end up in the recycling bin. There are many ways how to reuse them and give them a second or even a third chance.

Uses for Plastic Bags

Protect your side view mirrors.
During freezing weather, tie plastic bags around your side view mirrors to prevent them from frosting over. It will save you time in the morning because you don’t have to scrape them!
Cheap packing material.
Substitute plastic bags as parcel padding for breakable or valuable items. You don’t have to purchase Styrofoam and it works just as well! Just make sure to pack it in securely.
Painting tool preservation.
Place wet paint brushes inside plastic bags and tie them shut to keep them from drying out while you’re taking a break. You can also use plastic bags to seal paint cans by putting a plastic bag over the paint can opening before you put the lid on. This prevents old, dried paint from the lid from falling back into the can!
Keep your shoes in pristine condition.
Walking through a muddy area? Is it snowing and you don’t have snowshoes? Tying plastic bags over your shoes can keep them clean and dry during adverse weather conditions. After washing your shoes, you can also ball plastic bags up and stuff them into your shoes while they are air-drying to help them keep their shape!
Plant protection.
You can tie a plastic bag around your plant overnight to protect it from the frost. Just remember to remove it the next morning! You can also use plastic bags as additional padding for your knees when gardening by tying them around your knees. They also keep you clean!
Creative Craft.
There are many creative crafts you can make from plastic bags! Here are just a few:
- Woven basket
- Rug
- Jump Rope

Uses for Paper Bags

Use them for compost.
Collect kitchen scraps and other compost items in a paper bag and then when it’s time to compost, dump out the food scraps and then tear up the bag to go directly into the compost pile.
Use it as a recycling container.
Paper bags are recyclable, so to make recycling paper easy, you can put all of your weekly paper recycling in a paper bag and then toss the whole thing into your recycling bin!
Cover books.
Cut and tape paper bags to cover and protect your favorite books. They’re also great to protect kids’ textbooks from damage and allows them to decorate them however they want!
Moving or Traveling containers.
Don’t want to pay for extra boxes when moving or traveling? No problem! Load up your paper bags with clothes, books, and more to make moving easier or to pack in the car for trips.
Prevent weeds in your garden.
Place plain (no dye) paper bags on the soil around your plants before covering with compost or mulch. It adds an extra layer of weed prevention for your plants!
Use as gift bags and tags.
With a little creativity, you can turn an old paper bag into a cute holiday gift bag. You can also turn paper bags into actual gift wrap by turning them inside out or turn them into gift tags!
Kid’s art activities.
You can use paper bags to make masks for Halloween or play time. Just cut out eye and mouth holes and let them draw funny faces on them! You can also make a kite and many more kid-friendly crafts!

Packaging student finds true calling in the packaging industry

Today, I planned to post an article about how to best reuse luxury paper bags, but then I came across an article on LinkedIn and I decided to re-post the article here.

As a sales manager at Print and Packaging Solutions, Ltd., I can relate to, and understand, what this student found when switching from mechanical engineering to the packaging industry. This industry is so diverse and there are so many fields, where you will find yourself as fish in the water. Packaging is not only about boxes and plastic or paper bags, there is so much more behind the scene.

Introductory courses in packaging led undergraduate student Brian Forté to change his major to packaging at Michigan State University. Through the School of Packaging in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, students learn to create innovative solutions that enhance or maintain product quality, increase efficiency and reduce waste. In doing so, students contribute to the economic development and quality of life of people across the world through highly relevant, educational experiences and cutting-edge research.

“I became interested in the introductory packaging courses after speaking with students and faculty in the School of Packaging. My curiosity grew after taking the introductory courses, which made me feel like I had found a home at the School of Packaging,” Forté explained.

Brian Forté is a senior, expected to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from the MSU School of Packaging in spring 2022. Prior to changing his major, he studied mechanical engineering for three years. He has completed internships with Mars-Wrigley, Henkel and Giliead Sciences. Following graduation, Forté plans to pursue a career in the packaging industry and to also obtain an MBA.

“You can use a packaging degree in a lot more ways than you think. Aerospace, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food packaging are just a few of the opportunities you can find in the industry,” Forté explained. “There are very few majors at MSU which consistently provide students with over a 95% job placement rate after graduation. That alone speaks to the quality we produce and how sought-after students are in this field.”

MSU is the first and the most comprehensive packaging school in higher education. It is also the largest, graduating half of all packaging engineers in the U.S. each year.

One of Forté’s most memorable experiences from the School of Packaging was the opportunity to travel to PackExpo in Las Vegas this past September. He explained that PackExpo is a trade show experience on the cutting-edge of processing and packaging innovation.

“I was able to network with the School of Packaging alumni and see firsthand the topics we are learning in the classroom and was able to share my experiences in the School of Packaging with professionals across the packaging industry,” he said.

During his time at MSU, Forté has been active in many student organizations including: Athletes in Action, School of Packaging Curriculum Committee, Coalition of Packaging Professionals and Academic Connections (CoPPAC) Executive Board Fundraising Chair and the Youth Ministry Team at Mount Hope Church. In addition, he serves as one of the first students on the newly formed School of Packaging Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Forté also enjoys serving as a resident assistant in Rather Hall at MSU.

“My favorite activity is being a resident assistant on campus. I love helping students succeed and having the opportunity to make a lifetime impact on young adults’ lives truly means a lot to me,” he shared.

Helping others, fundraising and entrepreneurship are key skills Forté learned early in life.

In high school, Forté founded The Brian Forté Foundation (formerly From the Bottom of Our Soles), a nonprofit providing new and gently used shoes for those in need in Detroit. For the inaugural event in 2016, nearly 250 pairs of new and gently used shoes were provided to the homeless of Detroit. He was awarded the Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council for his efforts.

Forté wrote a reflective piece about this experience that changed his life.

“I just wanted to make a change in the community and then grew into something that I could not stop that year of 2016,” he wrote. “For those aspiring entrepreneurs reading this, you must realize that you are not guaranteed tomorrow, so why waste time of pushing things off until the next day. As harsh it may sound, it is true and is what I live by everyday.”

The new way of spirits packaging

Today, I would love to talk about the packaging, that is here for years now but there is a new way, how to use it or where to use it.

Since the pandemic is still here and not showing much vanishing, many spirit shops and distilleries had to shut down their brick stores and refocus their business onto online sales. This came with a new way, how to pack their spirits more safely and economically, ready to deliver to their consumers.

I am introducing today three of the options, we worked on in the past and are happy to help with any inquiries, you might come up with.

The first is a folding cardboard box, that can hold a poly pouch. One of the edges of the box is perforated so the consumer can tear the edge and pour out the spirit.

The next very protective way of spirits packaging is the stand-up pouch option with a spout. The packaging can be made from fully recyclable materials and fully customised.

The last and very popular packaging, I would love to introduce is the bag-in-box wine. This packaging is getting pretty viral and found a lot of fans among catering companies. The outer packaging is a corrugated box that can be fully customised, with a spout. Inside the box is a biodegradable poly bag, that can hold 2/3/5 L of wine.

What gsm is the best for your tissue/wrapping paper?

There are a few thicknesses when it comes to luxury tissue paper or wrapping paper, and today, I will explain a little bit regarding the gsm (thickness), and which is the best option for your product.

14gsm thick MG Tissue Paper is Acid-Free, however, it is not suitable for direct food use or wrapping. This type of tissue paper is suitable for light gift-wrapping or decoration.

17gsm or 18gsm up to 21gsm luxury crips MG Tissue Paper is Acid-Free, it is suitable for direct food use, and is 100% recyclable. This tissue paper is great for gift wrapping but also for highlighting your other packaging, such as boxes or bags.

The tissue paper can be printed one colour, step and repeat pattern, or one design as per the images below.

30gsm tissue paper is a thicker tissue paper and if you need to customize the tissue paper with more than one colour or print onto both sides, this thickness is the right one for your branding.

40gsm greaseproof paper is a great solution for any food-related packaging/wrapping.

40gsm natural kraft wrapping paper is getting very popular besides all wrapping options if the customer doesn’t want to opt for a counter bag (I will talk about these in a different article).

Printed dark brown or black, giving it the newspaper look and feel is a great option for coffee bars, gift shops, veg and fruit stalls, etc.

There are thicker wrapping papers on the market, these can be produced from GF Smith’s special collection, or coated wrapping paper you may usually sea at gift shops for wrapping presents, the thickness is 90gsm.

The best way how to supply the artwork is a vector format for simple logos and high resolution Adobe Illustrator files (can be supplied via WeTransfer) for full colour artworks.

Foil blocking is very environmentally friendly thanks to the recyclable nature of the materials involved and the different options when it comes to energy consumption during production.
